| JAZZ |
Routine must consist
of primarily jazz technique. Only 3
gymnastic tricks allowed. A half point will
be deducted for each additional gymnastic trick in
this category. Deductions are taken from
your total score. |
| TAP |
Routine consisting
of tap technique. Tap sounds may not be on
recording. |
| LYRICAL |
Routine consisting
of jazz technique and modern ballet. Routine
should demonstrate balance, extension, isolations,
and control. |
| BALLET |
Routine must include
classical steps and ballet technique. |
| POINTE |
Routine must consist
of pointe/toe technique. |
| CONTEMPORARY |
consists of modern and ballet technique, reaching beyond the standard jazz vocabulary |
| OPEN |
Any routine that
does not qualify under any of other categories
listed. FIRE or any WEAPONS are NOT
PERMITTED in any acts. |
| MUSICAL
THEATER |
A routine in which
music is utilized from a Broadway, television,
film, or specialty show. Dancer is not
required to portray the character. |
| VOCAL |
Routine may be any
type of musical presentation. No lead voices
permitted on tape. A singing presentation in
any style (timing, musical range, expression and
pitch are judged). May be done a capella or
with music. A microphone will be provided. |
| NOVICE |
Dancers with 0-2 years of competition experience. This level is designated for the younger, less experienced dancer. You must check this in addition to the category of dance you are competiting in. |
| MODELING |
Contestants should
attempt a front or back "T" formation,
pageant poses. Props such as hats, gloves,
jackets, etc. are acceptable and encouraged to
use. NO SWIMSUITS ALLOWED. |
| DRAMA |
(Acting) Involves a
presentation of a published skit, short drama, or
cutting from a play. All material must be
memorized. Limited staging, costumes, and
props may be used, but must be provided by the
entrants, and be on hand and able to be set up
quickly at the time of competition. Obscene
material is prohibited. |
| SONG
AND DANCE |
Routine must consist
of vocal and dance. A microphone is not
required, however lip synching is permitted. |
| FOLKLORIC |
A routine
consisting of ethnic style dancing such a
Polynesian, Polka, Hawaiian, etc. |
| HIP
HOP / FUNK |
Routine may include
jazz technique combined with hip hop and funk
choreography. Acrobatics and breakdancing is
permitted. |
| PRODUCTION |
A group consisting
of a minimum 19 dancers incorporating any style or
dance or acrobatic. Production category has
a limit of 8 minutes. |
IMPROVISATION:
LYRICAL |
Each performer will
have 3 minutes to perform an improvised routine in
the style of dance selected. Metro Directors will
choose all the music that suits that style of
dance. They will not accept any song requests.
Judging will be based on creativity, originality,
and technique. |
